I called in a £4,000 rescue team to search for my late wife’s dog

His late wife chose their pet from a dogs’ home, so Alfie the mongrel has an extra special place in Rod Chivers’s heart. Now, with the eight-year-old dog missing, Mr Chivers is leaving no stone unturned in his search.

The 68-year-old widower has enlisted the help of search and rescue teams, pet detectives and drainage experts to track down his beloved companion since he disappeared on Saturday.

He was prepared to spend almost £4,000 looking for Alfie, who vanished while exploring a badger sett on one of their twice-daily walks.

Mr Chivers, who runs a recycling and scrap metal business in Rugby, Warwickshire, said: ‘It’s just the not knowing that’s the destroying thing.

‘Of course, it’s my wife’s dog and she died three years ago. It’s my lifeline really. I have to find him.’

Mr Chivers spent hours looking for Alfie after he vanished down a badger sett by a disused railway line.

When there was no sign of the black and tan dog, he called in the search and rescue team from West Midlands fire service – expecting to pay £688 an hour.

Their monitoring equipment is designed to detect signs of life among the rubble of earthquakes, collapsed buildings, explosions and landslides

But the seven-man unit spent five hours searching for Alfie without success.

Mr Chivers also paid £180 to drainage experts who spent four hours searching the sett’s 26ft deep tunnels using a CCTV camera, but they drew a blank.

And volunteers from a pet detective service have spent the evenings desperately scouring the area, without any luck.

Mr Chivers, who has three children, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, said: ‘It’s a very worrying time and some might say I’m mad to throw so much money at it, but Alfie means more to me and my family than money.’

His late wife, Janet, adopted the dog from a rescue centre but died of lung cancer two years later, aged 68.

The land where Alfie disappeared is managed by conservation association Natural England, which told Mr Chivers he would only be allowed to dig up the sett if he could prove Alfie was trapped underground.

Warwickshire fire service did not have the right equipment, so Mr Chivers was referred to the larger West Midlands brigade.

Though he accepted a quote of £688 an hour, the force said last night that he would not have to pay.

A spokesman added that, while the job fell outside the team’s usual remit, it would waive the charge because there would have been a ‘risk to life if an individual tried to carry out a rescue [of Alfie] themselves’.

Watch manager Rob Norman said: ‘We’ve done as much of a search of that bank as possible. I’m absolutely confident that if Alfie were there... we would have located him.’

Mr Norman believes Alfie, who is microchipped, may have found another way out of the sett and could have been taken in by a nearby resident.

Dumped Dog's Looking For homes

We all know the saying 'A dog is for life, not just for Christmas' but sadly hundreds of pets are still abandoned after the festive period.This is because people change their minds about keeping their Christmas presents when they realise the cost involved.

Animal charities say fewer people are adopting dogs this year because of the recession. We will be meeting some perfect pooches in need of rehoming, including some gorgeous puppies.

1) DUMPED IN LAYBY

Name: Robyn
Age: 6 -12 months old

Breed: Patterdale terrier

Story: Brown and black terrier Robyn was found by a member of the public in a layby in Kent on the 29th December and handed in to the Brands Hatch branch of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. She was scared, timid and dehydrated and in a bad condition. She was not wearing a collar and didn't have a microchip. Robyn is a lively, bouncy and comical girl whose cheeky terrier character shines through. She's a bright dog and has the potential to learn tricks!

New home: Robyn does have a sensitive side so needs owners who can build her confidence. She is looking for a countryside home with experienced owners who can give her plenty of mental and physical stimulation, and lots of TLC. She'd rather be the only dog in her new home.

2) LITTLE WHIRLWIND

Name: Archie

Age: 4 months old

Breed: Jack Russell

Story: Black and white terrier Archie was picked up as a stray by a dog warden on the 9th January. He spent seven days in the local pound before being brought to The Blue Cross centre in Kimpton, Hertfordshire. He wasn't in a bad condition, but was lucky to be picked up before things deteriorated. He's an active little dog - a real little whirlwind who loves to greet all the people he meets.

New home: Archie is looking for a home with an active family who have lots of time and energy for a busy, energetic terrier.

3) FUN LOVING GIRL

Name: Rita

Age: 10 -12 weeks old

Breed: Mastiff cross

Story: Rita came in to the Battersea centre on the 2nd January after she was found dumped in a box along with her five siblings. All six dogs are looking for a new home but we just have Rita in the studio with us today. She's a fun loving, happy go lucky puppy who is very sweet natured.

New home: Rita will grow in to a large dog so her new owner will need to be aware of this and she will need lots of training.

4) PLAYFUL PUP

Name: Thelma (note - Thelma's brother and sister Scooby and Daphne were supposed to appear with her today but they are poorly so couldn't make it - but they are looking for homes when they are better)

Breed: Beagle cross

Story: Thelma and her siblings Scooby and Daphne were handed in to a dog pound between Christmas and the New Year as their owners could no longer care for them or rehome them privately. They are energetic and playful and get on well with other dogs they have met. They love to learn new things as long as food is the incentive! Thelma was very poorly and had to have an emergency operation at only four months old but is recovering very well.

New home: They would ideally like an active home with experienced beagle owners who are home for a lot of the day.

Breed: Collie cross, but they're not sure what she's crossed with exactly!

Story: Avril came to the Blue Cross centre in Bromsgrove on the 9th January after she had been left to fend for herself as a stray with her sister Becca. She is a really sweet and affectionate dog, despite having been abandoned, and gets on well with people and other dogs.

New home: Avril is looking for a lovely new home where someone will be around for quite a lot of the day while she is still a pup. She would be happy to live with children and other dogs.

Breed: Staffie cross

Story: Goldie was brought into Battersea on 28th December by a member of the public who found her and her two litter mates (who have now been rehomed) as strays. She's a confident and cheeky pup but full of fun and very affectionate!

New home: She has a lovely temperament and is very sociable so could be rehomed with other dogs or even a cat. She would love to be in a house that has a garden for her to play in and she would need training.

7) ABANDONED SPANIEL PUPPIES

Names: Angelica, Twinkle and Gabriel

Age: Roughly 14 weeks old

Breed: Cocker spaniels

Story: This cheeky trio were found abandoned on 2nd January on a member of the public's driveway in a cage. The people who found them said they opened their living room curtains and the pups were just there. They had no bedding or water and by the state of the cage they had been in it most of the night. There are two girls and a boy. All are very lively, happy and friendly. In the time they've been at the centre everyone has fallen in love with them and cannot wait to see them find happy new homes.

New home: They will be looking for active teenage homes with owners that will be home a lot of the time to help them settle in and assist with their training. They’d prefer to live with other dogs that can show them the ropes and provide them with a play partner! Twinkle has slightly shorter legs than her siblings so looks even cuter than the others!

Dog’s leg amputated after allegedly being thrown from van

A TWO-year old lurcher who was allegedly thrown from the back of a van in Cambridgeshire has lost his leg.

Boris was brought into Wood Green, the Animals Charity in Godmanchester on December 21 with a badly fractured femur in his back left leg.

A member of the public said they saw the dog being thrown from the back of a white transit van near to Melbourn in South Cambridgeshire. RSPCA officials are investigating the incident.
Staff at the centre decided to remove the leg following an X-ray. Boris spent Christmas recovering with a foster family in Wisbech.

Head of Animal Welfare Shelley Wooding said: “It is extremely sad that Boris, through no fault of his own, was abandoned in such a cruel way before Christmas. We have passed what evidence we have to the RSPCA for further investigation.

“In the meantime we would strongly urge anyone thinking of giving up a pet to contact us for advice and support. “It is also a reminder that any animal is a long term commitment and financial burden and any decision to get a new pet should be made carefully with the whole family in mind.”

Online pet detectives solve case of the stolen spaniels to retrieve their dogs outside travellers' camp By David Wilkes

No doubt the dognappers thought they had found a soft target when they snatched these fluffy little fellows. But the disappearance of six rare Tibetan spaniels from award-winning breeders Heather Simper and Elisabeth Scoates galvanised dog lovers across the world into remarkably powerful action.
Appalled by the raid on the kennels in the Oxfordshire village of Upton, near Didcot, friends set up a Facebook site appealing for information about the missing dogs.
And vital tips soon began flooding in about their possible whereabouts.

Within 24 hours, more than 450 people from as far afield as the U.S. and Norway had joined the online hunt. Hundreds of ‘missing’ posters showing pictures of the dogs were distributed and vets alerted across Britain.
By the day after the theft, sufficient leads were established for retired teachers Miss Simper, 64, and Miss Scoates, 63, to point the finger of suspicion at a travellers’ camp 25 miles away.

They informed police, who visited the camp near Tadley, Hampshire, and found one of the dogs, three-year-old Harriet, tethered outside a caravan.
Like all the dogs, she has been microchipped so her identity was easily confirmed.
The next day, two-year-old Gus, a champion show dog, was found outside the same camp. His owners suspect he might have been freed after captors realised the dogs had become ‘too hot to hold on to’.
Both dogs were hungry but not physically harmed, and are now safely back home.

The kennels at the back of the home of Elisabeth Scoates and Heather Simper from Didcot, Oxfordshire, where they had six dogs stolen.

Another dog, Ivy, had turned up on their doorstep, possibly having run off when the thieves struck. But the search for Gladys, two, and seven-month-old puppies Alice and Amy continues. Last night Miss Simper, who has judged at Crufts, said: ‘The theft left us feeling numb, it’s like somebody stealing our children.
‘But the support from the local community and the general public has been immense and we can’t thank everyone enough.’

Tibetan spaniels originate from the Himalayan mountains,where monks used them as watchdogs. Puppies cost up to £1,000. The dogs were stolen on Tuesday. Miss Scoates described seeing four men coming out of the kennels and running towards them shouting, before they drove off.

By yesterday, numbers joining the ‘Missing Tibetan Spaniels’ page on Facebook had swelled to more than 1,500.

Some people fear the dogs may have been spirited away, possibly to Ireland, to be used to make money from breeding. The appeal has also spread to Twitter, where celebrities such as Gary Barlow and Davina McCall have been asked to help.

One Tadley resident said a few dozen families live on the traveller site, adding: ‘I wouldn’t go anywhere near that place. I’ve heard the police won’t even go in there unless there are a few of them.’

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: ‘We are investigating and appealing for witnesses.’

Animal cruelty cases rise by 50%

Bumper needed the whole leg amputated, but recovered wellAnimal cruelty convictions rose by more than 50% in Wales last year, the RSPCA has said.
The increase reflected a "worrying" rise in the number of people prepared to treat pets with "brute force instead of compassion", said the charity.
RSPCA Wales inspectors described 2005 as one of the worst years of deliberate cruelty to animals they had witnessed.
The report came as police began a hunt for whoever put a cat in a bin in the sun on Anglesey, and left it to die.
RSCPA Wales said the cruelty cases it has dealt with during 2005 included a dog whose leg was amputated at home and another who was stabbed repeatedly by her owner.
The charity's annual report shows the number of people they prosecuted for animal cruelty rose by 60% over that period.
The cases included Griffith Prosser, 35, from Aberfan, who amputated the front leg of Bumper, a collie cross, with an electric knife after the dog was knocked down by a car.
Prosser was banned from owning a dog for 10 years.

Buffy recovered after being attacked by her owner
Another case involved Buffy, a four-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier cross, who was stabbed extensively in her rear, head and legs by her 20-year-old owner.
The man later told police he had been taking recreational drugs and drinking heavily and could not remember attacking Buffy and another dog, 19-month-old Staffordshire bull terrier, Cassie.
He pleaded guilty to two charges of causing unnecessary suffering and was sentenced to six months in prison and disqualified from owning any animal for 10 years.
Meanwhile, hours after the report was published, police at Llanfachraeth, Anglesey, launched an investigation to find the person who shut a cat in a wheelie bin during the hot weather.

Buffy is 'brilliant' with people, says new owner Matthew Harding
The cat, Jiffy, died ten minutes after she was found hot and distressed by her owner. It is believed Jiffy had been shut in the bin for several hours.
Yet neglect was still the most common cause behind the majority of animal welfare cases in Wales, said the RSPCA.
Inspectors were called to 352 incidents where animals had no access to water, 298 where animals did not have suitable veterinary treatment and 357 where animals did not have a clean living environment.
'Compassion'
Martyn Hubbard, RSPCA Superintendent for Wales and West, said: "2005 will go down as one of the most violent towards animals.
"Sadly, despite our best efforts, there are those who continue to ignore our messages and treat animals with brute force instead of compassion.
"The cases highlighted today show why the RSPCA will continue to prosecute those who feel they are doing nothing wrong when harming an animal.
"On a more positive note, it is heartening to see how many of these cruelty victims enjoy new and happy lives once they are rehomed by our dedicated staff up and down the country.
"The pleasure these animals give their new owners shows that the vast majority of people appreciate the important part a pet plays in the family."

STOLEN ... Freddie The Jack Russell Terrier from Cambs.

A cold hearted thief taunted the owner of the dog he was stealing and then drove off while she looked on helplessly. Freddie, a tri-colour, smooth coated, short legged Jack Russell terrier, was standing on the drive of Freddie's owner (Ms H) home at Manea, March at 3.30pm on May 9th, 2006

Ms H was harnessing her horse, when she heard someone whistling to the dog. She could not let go of the young horse and Freddie was lured into the stranger's vehicle. Ms H had been aware of the vehicle, a white, open backed, twin cab 4 x 4, passing her property. It then turned around and she saw a man standing outside the vehicle with the door open calling to Freddie.

The man is described as "big and square looking" and was wearing a short-sleeved shirt. When he had snatched Freddie, he got into his vehicle and drove slowly down the road with his arm through the open window and his hand resting on the roof, looking back at Ms Habbin through the rear view mirror. "I know that if I had started to chase after him he would have accelerated away quickly," said Ms H. "Freddie travels in my van with me and we are the absolute best of friends.

He is my grandson's pet," she said. The three-year-old terrier has an overshot jaw which makes him look as though he is smiling and he has been castrated, so will not be able to breed.

Dog Whisperer Sued over Injury to TV Producers Dog

The host of US TV show The Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan, is being sued over an allegation that a pet Labrador was injured at his dog training centre.

TV producer Flody Suarez claims his pet Gator was suffocated by a choke collar and forced to run on a treadmill, which resulted in bleeding and bruising.
Mr Suarez claims medical costs have already reached £13,000 qnd equires further ongoing treatment.

Mr Suarez is suing for breach of contract, fraud, animal cruelty and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
He is seeking more than £13,520 in damages.
Mr Suarez said he took his dog to the clinic in February to treat phobias of strangers and other dogs.

In court papers filed at the Los Angeles Superior Court, he claimed Gator was rushed to a vet an hour after dropping his five-year-old pet off at Cesar Millan's Dog Psychology Centre.
The dog was "bleeding from his mouth and nose, in an oxygen tent gasping for breath with severe bruising to his back inner thighs", the legal papers said.

A spokesman for the National Geographic Channel said it had not been served with a lawsuit and did not comment on pending litigation

DOES ANYONE KNOW THIS LITTLE CAT?

FOUND, A 6-9 month old white and tabby female was found sleeping under a bush, for2 weeks, at Canada Fields, Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. Local office workers were feeding her. She had recently been speyed, so obviously has an owner out there somewhere, but sadly she is not microchipped. She is very friendly and playful and in excellent health.

An elderly female was found in Welwyn Garden City in a poorly condition. She is aged about 14 and is a pretty tortoiseshell. She is also arthritic and has lost a few teeth. This cat also has hyperthyroidism for which she is now on medication. If no owners are traced after a month she will rehomed.

Danger to Scottish Cats and Dogs From Missing Eagle

An eagle owl has gone missing in the Lothians, sparking fears it may attack cats and small dogs as it hunts for food.
The three-foot tall brown and white bird disappeared from his owner's garden in Bridgend, Linlithgow, at about 2pm yesterday. The bird, called Fergus, has not been fed for two days and police fear hunger will drive it to attack animals.

Bird experts warned the public not to approach the giant bird and to keep pets away from it.
Owner Chris Imlach, 34, said Fergus was in the garden ready for flying when he got loose.
Mr Imlach, a recovery driver, said the bird was one of the largest types of owl in the world and fairly strong - capable of lifting up the family dog.
He said: "It's not been fed in two days so will be quite hungry. He's lifted up my five stone Staffordshire Bull Terrier off the ground before.
"I'm worried about the bird and that if anyone goes near him he might lash out.
"We feed him frozen chicks and he goes after rabbits so he does eat live food.
"I'd be quite worried about cats and dogs if he was hungry."
Mr Imlach said Fergus, who has a 5ft wing span, was "good natured" but had to be handled with heavy duty leather gloves.
The father-of-four said he had reported the loss of the bird, which usually flew at around waist height, to the police and to the Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Doreen Graham of the Scottish SPCA warned people to stay away from the bird and to keep their pets away from it.
She said: "People need to take care of small dogs and cats because these magnificent birds are birds of prey and in the wild would hunt small animals. I'd advise the public to stay away because they would scare it away - just alert the authorities.
"Any wild animal can be dangerous if approached as it requires special handling, best left to the experts."
Neil Fowler, of the Independent Bird Register, which supplies identification rings for 58,000 birds in the UK, said anyone who spotted the bird should phone them.
He said: "We supply rings to 13,000 keepers of birds and we will phone up our owners to look for it."
Mr Fowler said that should the bird remain missing, the register would inform local falconers, clubs and wildlife crime officers and put a notice in International Falconer magazine.
A Lothian and Borders Police spokeswoman said: "We would appeal to anyone who sees this distinctive bird of prey to contact police straight away.
"It should not be approached by members of the public and people should not attempt to catch it themselves.
"This is a very large bird of prey and is capable of attacking small animals.
"It has not been fed in two days so it may be trying to source food."

The hunt is on for a nine-week-old puppy worth £1,000 which has been snatched by a thief.
The crook visited the home of a breeder claiming he was buying the bitch pug as a Mother's Day present. But when the woman's back was turned he ran out of the door with the puppy under his arm. And when the breeder's husband stood in front of the getaway vehicle the thief drove at him, knocking him to the ground.Police are now appealing for information about the theft in Whichers Gate Road in Rowlands Castle. "I was very seriously ill 6 years ago and when I finely got out of hospital to aid my recovery my family promised me a seal point kitten, it took us five years of searching to find one then Jasmine came in to my life… I made her into my escort for my good health she was my lucky charm. I was in the Southern General hospital in Glasgow for four month as I collapsed one Sunday on 9th Jan 2000 with a aneurism in the brain, no warning, just woke up one day in hospital. I didn’t have a clue what had happened… woke up getting staples taken out of my head. When I finely got home we started the search for a seal point, they were like "gold dust" no one had one for sale. I called her after my favorite flower she was so very special to me and I to her in her own wee way" …

Cat Mystery Solved, Bitter Sweet Reunion

“You will pleased to know that Maisie as we called her was reunited tonight with her owners. Her real name is Jes (Jessica).

The sad news is that her walk never improved whilst she was with us, so we took her to the vet Thursday for x-rays but nothing was discovered.

Since then we have learnt from her owners that her health had been declining since Christmas. They took her to the vets the week before she disappeared and has the cat equivalent to debenture.

She had gone missing the night before I found her, and was assumed by her owners that she had gone off to die somewhere. .

I am so pleased she is reunited, although I am going to miss her dearly as we had decided to keep hold of her if no one came to claim her.

Thank you for all your help”.

Stolen Penguin URGENT

Please find attached a photo of the missing baby penguin. It's parents are called Oscar and Kyala and the zoo have named it Toga. It was hatched on 18th September and is still being fed by it's parents. It will not feed from a human and will be very stressed. It is not as cuddly as it looks and will bite when frightened. Last seen at 4.30pm on Saturday on Sunday morning. The keepers searched it's enclosure and looked for any possibility that it may have escaped by itself but found none. If not found quickly it will die as it relies on it's parents for food, someone must know of it's whereabouts and our main priority is to have the baby returned as soon as possible.
